How to Choose the Right Size Door Canopy

The question we get most is: "What size door canopy do I need?" It comes down to two measurements — width across the wall, and projection out from it.

Measuring Your Doorway

Measure the outside of the door frame, not the door itself, then look at the wall around it. Check for:

• Clear brickwork above the frame for the brackets
• Anything in the way — lights, alarm boxes, house numbers, cabling
• Head height, so nobody walks into the front edge
• Whether a neighbouring wall or bay limits the width

Matching Size to Your Door

Aim to overhang the frame by roughly 300mm each side. As a rough guide:

• 900mm to 1000mm wide: back doors, side doors and narrow porches.
• 1200mm to 1500mm wide: a standard 838mm front door. The sizes most people buy.
• 1800mm and wider: doors with a side light, wide stone surrounds or French doors.

Understanding Door Canopy Materials

Material decides the look, the weight and how much light reaches your hallway.

GRP, Polycarbonate and Glass

GRP moulds well into lead-effect and tile-effect finishes, weighs very little and suits traditional houses. Polycarbonate on aluminium or steel brackets is clear or bronze tinted, so a dark hall keeps its daylight. Toughened glass with stainless fittings looks sharpest on a modern frontage but is far heavier to lift into place.

What About the Brackets and Fixings?

The wall matters as much as the canopy. Common wall types and their fixings:

• Solid brick — standard masonry bolts into the brick, never the mortar joint
• Rendered block — longer fixings to reach solid material behind the render
• Cavity wall — resin anchors or through-bolts for a deeper canopy
• Timber frame — fix into the studs, located first with a detector

Fitting Your Canopy

Most canopies arrive as a kit with brackets, fixings and instructions. We suggest:

• Allowing about two hours for a standard GRP or polycarbonate canopy
• Having a second person to hold it level while you mark the holes
• Setting a slight fall to the front so water runs off
• Checking every bolt is tight before you let go of the canopy

Maintenance Tips

To keep your door canopy looking right:

• Clear leaves and moss off the top a couple of times a year
• Wash polycarbonate with warm soapy water, never a solvent
• Check the wall fixings for movement after a hard winter
• Clear any gutter or downpipe so water does not back up
• Touch up chipped paint on steel brackets to stop rust taking hold
