What size door canopy do I need?
Aim for a canopy at least 300mm wider than the door frame on each side. A standard 838mm front door suits a 1500mm canopy. For projection, 500mm keeps rain off the lock and 900mm covers someone standing on the step.
Which canopy material should I choose?
GRP with a lead or tile effect suits traditional frontages and is light to fit. Polycarbonate on aluminium brackets lets daylight into a dark hallway. Toughened glass looks sharpest on modern homes but weighs considerably more.
How long does delivery usually take?
Times vary by retailer, but most canopies arrive within 3–10 working days. Made-to-order glass and bespoke timber canopies take longer. The retailer will normally contact you to arrange a slot.
Can I fit a door canopy myself?
Most GRP and polycarbonate canopies are a two-person job taking a couple of hours. You need a masonry drill, a level and fixings that suit your wall. Heavy glass canopies are usually better left to a fitter, and several retailers offer installation as an add-on.
Do I need planning permission for a door canopy?
Usually not. A domestic door canopy counts as permitted development provided it stays under 3 square metres, below 3 metres high and 2 metres back from a boundary fronting a highway. Listed buildings and conservation areas follow stricter rules, so check locally.
